Date of Separation Masterclass
Description
In California divorce law, the date of separation can have significant financial consequences because it often determines when community property accumulation stops. This sprint explores how the date of separation is defined and documented, and why establishing a clear separation timeline is essential for protecting financial interests. Participants learn how courts evaluate evidence and how conflicting narratives about separation can create disputes later in the divorce process.
Participants will analyze the types of evidence commonly used to support a separation date, including communication records, living arrangements, and financial behavior. The session guides participants in constructing a clear narrative of events that can support their position if the date of separation becomes contested. By the end of the sprint, participants will have drafted a defensible separation narrative and identified supporting documentation that strengthens their position.
